Uncle Everett
No nieces and nephews were ever any closer to an uncle than we five kids were to our Uncle Everett. For all our lives, we spent so much time with rances and Everett that it was hard to believe they lived all the way down in Fort Lauderdale! But they spent many summers with us, as well as most every Christmas after Mamaw & Papaw moved in with us.
I could never have enough space to share all the wonderful memories
I have of my Uncle Everett. But one particularly fond memory is the
wonderful cookouts we used to have on their patio in Fort Lauderdale.
I can almost taste those deliciously thick steaks that he grilled.
M-m-m-m!!! And also the wonderful breakfasts at the Lauderdale beach.
It seems no food ever tasted as good as what he grilled out there on
the patio. And it started my life-long love of barbecuing outdoors.
Wherever I went with Everett, I had a wonderful time. I spent great times with him in Nassau, Disney World and one memorable vacation to Yellowstone National Park!
Everett was one of those people who had a great wealth of knowledge
on a hge variety of subjects. And up into his 90s, his mind was as
alert and sharp as any twenty-year-olds!
I often explored his mind with a million aquestions I'd have, and it was astounding that he had total recall on so many important moments in history. He actually remembered hearing the enws when the Titanic sank! And he remembered the Russian Revolution and the overthrow and murder of Tsar Nicholas II (he even remembered that they had told at first that his family had been exiled to Europe). In sharing his memories, it was like I had a front-row seat to these major events myself.
Christmas, birthdays and most special occasions in our family are not
the same now without my Uncle Everett. He was such an important part of
our lives. There's a beautiful saying that sums it up far better
than I could ...
that memory becomes a treasure"
We love you, Everett ... and we miss you!
