Dark Shadows, the critically acclaimed 1991 Gothic TV mini-series, told the story
of Victoria Winters, a young governess who traveled to an isolated mansion in Maine
where she found herself drawn into the world of an eccentric family plagued by
supernatural events. Among those shee encountered was Barnabas Collins, a member of
that family with a centuries old secret.
Based on the legendary 1960's soap opera of the same name, the 1991 revival was a
lavish production combining gothic romance and stylish horror. The show featured
a shining ensemble cast including Ben Cross, Joanna Going, Barbara Steele, Jean Simmons,
Roy Thinness, Lysette Anthony and Joseph Gordon-Levitt among others.
Although it was a huge hit at introduction (watched by 1 in 4 households according to
official ratings during that time period), an untimely international incident would
inflict a fatal wound to the show. The onset of the Gulf War caused NBC to continully
pre-empt or reschedule the early episodes resulting in viewer confusion and a loss of
momentum. In the end, despite receiving over 50,000 fan letters in protest, NBC canceled
the series after only 12 episodes. Since that time it has become a cult favorite,
developing a small but extremely devoted following.
The Dark Shadows Revival Series is now available on DVD.
