MEETING JONATHAN FRID

I have been fortunate enough to meet Jonathan "Barnabas" Frid on two occasions The first was in the mid-1980's when he performed one of his readings at the Cincinnati Public Library in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was a dream come true .... meeting my "hero" for the first time. He was cordial, kind, and extremely patient with the rather large crowd that was there to meet him. The first two pictures below were taken at that event.

The second time we met was also at one of his readings, this time at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio on Halloween night, October 31, 1990 Once again, he could not have been more kind to his fans. After his performance, he did a question and answer segment -- allowing us to ask him things we had always wanted to know and giving us a little insight on his "Dark Shadows" years. After that, he went out into the hallway to greet the loyal few who had stayed behind hoping to get a more personal meeting with him. I had written a letter to him, hoping that if I could meet him I could give the letter to him so I wouldn't take up too much of his time. Even though I did get to meet with him and spend quite awhile talking wtih him, I still gave him my letter. A week later, I received a beautiful autographed photo from him in the mail.

It is always a joy when you finally get to meet someone you have loved and admired for so many years, and they turn out to be as special as you had hoped they would be. I will forever remember my two meetings with Jonathan Frid, and will always think of him as one of the kindest, most gracious men I have ever met. I grew up adoring "Barnabas Collins", and came away knowing that the man behind the character is even more special.
